Enjoy a unique experience in the heart of the Oceania Hôtel de France by sleeping in a room designed by an artist. Painter Justin Weiler, who won the Nantes Prize for Visual Arts in 2016, was given free rein to redesign Room 107.
The artist uses paint as a material to be sculpted: The interplay of shadows, chiaroscuro, reflections, and transparency transforms the space. Justin Weiler reveals different shades of black by applying multiple thin layers of paint. The artist then uses the paint as if sculpting it, trapping the light by highlighting contrasts. Like the walls of a greenhouse, large painted windows stretch to the high ceiling, transforming the room into an altar, while the motif of the blind – vertical in response to the spacious, high-ceilinged room – acts as a second skin in the space. At the border between the interior and exterior, these lines make grids, revealing openings in the architecture through the light they create.
