Cancale was once the grand port of trawlermen who departed for months on end in quest of the North Atlantic waters. They took up residence at the Port de la Houle in the lower parts of the town, a district that has retained its charm with its narrow streets and old houses backed onto the cliff. Cancale is also renowned for its Belon oysters.
