Every Saturday morning, there is a huge market in the town centre on the Place des Lices. If you’re spending time in Rennes, it is an absolute must-see event, most of all because it is located in the city’s historic centre, and then because the profusion of fresh products offered in the open-air market: fish and shellfish (it’s the rule in Brittany), fruits and vegetables. In the very picturesque covered halls with their stalls tiled in the traditional way, fowl, meats and cooked meats, cheeses, breads, jams and honeys. The complex is made complete by a very beautiful flower market where traditional bouquets sit alongside small unpretentious bouquets of garden flowers (daffodils, tulips, and daisies). The contrast is unusual between the large stands and the stands of the small-scale producers that sell a chicken, a dozen eggs, or a few kilos of potatoes. The customers are regulars, practically “friends” because these loyal customers having been coming here without fail for years. The crowd is huge and colourful. A few musicians liven up the morning.
